This tutorial addresses RX4 air filter maintenance.

General Information

• The RX4 has an oil foam air filter that is situated beneath the motorcycle seat. To gain access to the air filter, you need to remove the rear seat, the front seat, the left rear body panels, and the air filter cover.
• The air filter should be cleaned or replaced every 2500 miles, or more often if the motorcycle is used in dusty conditions.
• You can wash the air filter with a suitable solvent and reoil it, or you can replace the air filter element and oil it.
• CSC stocks all required items for air filter maintenance, including air filter cleaning solvent , air filter oil , the filter elements , and other replacement parts .
• Tools required for air filter maintenance include an 8mm socket, a 3mm Allen wrench, a 5mm Allen wrench, and a Phillips-head screwdriver.

Procedure

Insert the ignition key in the left side panel and remove the rear seat.



Remove the two 8mm bolts securing the front seat and remove the front seat.



Remove the 5mm Allen bolt from the left side panel and remove the side panel.  You can allow it to hang by the motorcycle side; you do not need to disconnect the seat latch cable from the panel.


Remove the two 3mm Allen bolts from the left body panel.


Disconnect the flasher control module.  Set the body panel aside where it will not be scratched.



At this point, the air filter access panel and the five Phillips head screws securing it is accessible.  Push the harness out of the way.  Remove the five screws and remove the access panel.  The lower right screw will require holding the rubber body panel away from the air filter cover to gain access to the screw.





After removing the screws, remove the air filter access cover and set it aside.


At this point, you will have access to the air filter.


Grasp the air filter and pull it out of the motorcycle.




Note that the air filter has the exposed foam element facing up.  There is a metal screen on the filter that faces down.


The air filter element subassembly consists of four pieces (the lower screen, the filter element, the upper frame, and the screw that holds these three items together. Remove the screw to separate the four pieces.


The filter element is a serviceable item. We recommend washing the air filter element with Maxima Air Filter Cleaner.

After washing the air filter element, allow it to dry completely. After the filter element has dried, apply a light coat of air filter oil. We recommend Maxima FAB 1 Spray One Air Filter Oil for this purpose.

After performing the above operations, reassemble the motorcycle.  Assembly is the reverse of disassembly.
